[00:00:00] <Aaron1011> Okay, I will improve that
[00:01:54] <paulproteus> Yay!
[00:02:08] <paulproteus> I hope the above indicates the improvements needed, but it's very rambly so if needed I can summarize/repeat.
[00:02:30] <paulproteus> fijal: I have a crazy question for you.
[00:03:14] <paulproteus> If I want to promote the creation of "dynamic" web apps that are "just" scripts written in Python, embedded within static HTML+CSS+JS blobs, what are some useful tricks that can be used to make that run speedily, and what do you think is the speediest reasonable way to do that?
[00:03:44] <paulproteus> Oh, written in Python and presumably compiled to something that runs in the browser.
[00:03:46] <fijal> paulproteus: yes?
[00:04:07] <paulproteus> And what is a reasonably plausible expected speed level to expect from such a thing?
[00:04:12] <fijal> so you can't compile anything python to run in a browser
[00:04:23] <paulproteus> pygwt seems to be able to
[00:04:30] <fijal> bleh
[00:04:31] <fijal> no
[00:04:32] <fijal> it's not python
[00:04:36] <fijal> it's a python-looking JS
[00:04:45] <paulproteus> And/or you could "Just" embed CPython and your code compiled down with emscripten.
[00:05:13] <paulproteus> I am thinking it'd be nice if at Boston Python project night-type things, we could tell people, "You can write app-like logic in Python and here is how you embed it in your source tree and create a build process that generates browser-executable artifacts."
[00:05:26] <paulproteus> I forgot the precise use case I'm going for, but I seem to recall wanting this and you seem to be here.
[00:05:31] <fijal> that's very slow
[00:05:45] <fijal> cpython via emscripten
[00:06:37] <paulproteus> That's what I found, yeah.
[00:06:39] -!- audreyr has quit [Quit: audreyr]
[00:06:43] <paulproteus> e.g. paultag's http://hy.pault.ag could be purely client-side, which would be cool!
[00:07:54] -!- audreyr [audreyr!~audreyr@dre158.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl] has joined #openhatch
[00:09:28] <paulproteus> Yay rehi aukani
[00:09:31] <paulproteus> audreyr even.
[00:09:57] <audreyr> Yay :)
[00:12:24] <fijal> paulproteus: i think it's way too much work for such a stupid objective
[00:12:31] <paulproteus> Hah.
[00:12:31] <fijal> paulproteus: IMO we need to think bigger
[00:12:36] <paulproteus> Very well.
[00:12:41] <fijal> we need to think how to make distributed programs easier
[00:12:43] <paulproteus> I do want to save Python from irrelevance.
[00:12:46] <paulproteus> It'd be cool.
[00:12:51] <fijal> and not how to run this stupid things in the browser
[00:12:56] Nischayn22 is now known as Nischayn22|Away
[00:13:04] <fijal> python on the client side is irrelevant
[00:13:11] <fijal> python on the server side is not going anywhere
[00:13:31] -!- MacDiva has quit [Quit: MacDiva]
[00:15:26] <fijal> but I don't know how to do it
[00:17:02] <paulproteus> So let's just do random things we do know how to do!
[00:17:03] <paulproteus> Maybe.
[00:17:19] <paulproteus> ipython notebook is kind of like that

[03:31:36] <paulproteus> mlinksva: I am struggling to figure out what the interesting things about our being at PyCon were.
[03:32:13] <paulproteus> Maybe I am just tired, though.
[03:32:40] <paulproteus> I think the only especially remarkable things are us having a booth where we people donated for almost two dozen T-shirts, and that being there led to the announce list growing almost 50%
[03:32:54] <paulproteus> And that I met Tariq there who basically insisted we go to UMass.
[03:33:12] <paulproteus> Oh, and that Scaling Community Diversity Outreach had good Q&A.
[03:33:38] <paulproteus> I guess hallway track-wise, I had some great conversations with people about Scrapy.
[03:34:08] <paulproteus> And the hallway track is what led to me seeing paultag at the recent Transparency Camp, since Sunlight-y people were like "OMG LET'S OPENHATCHIFY TCAMP" which was cool!
[03:34:27] <paulproteus> And we managed to distribute over 2500 stickers!
[03:34:29] <paulproteus> (-:
[03:34:36] <paulproteus> But that fact is I think in the original pre-pycon post.
[03:34:58] <paulproteus> Oh, and that all the lovely people speaking on my panel run OpenHatch affiliated events, and we could link to the slides or video.
[03:35:13] <paulproteus> I think the video of that talk is the best thing, and maybe that should just be embedded front and center, and the rest can be a sequence of bullet points.
[03:35:23] <paulproteus> Is it okay to write short blog posts? I suppose it is.
[03:35:58] <paulproteus> Oh, and the fun of that panel, combined with hallway track and BoF conversations, led us to suggesting we work with PSF more hands-on doing more diversity outreach within existing Python user groups.
[03:36:00] <skay_> paulproteus: let me know if you want more metadata on the page http://pyvideo.org
[03:36:03] <paulproteus> There'll be an announcement about that soon.
[03:36:06] <skay_> like more urls or something
[03:36:16] * paulproteus is thinking aloud
[03:36:28] <paulproteus> skay_: Thanks! For one thing, can you add Daniel Choi as a speaker?
[03:36:34] <skay_> paulproteus: ps: http://pyvideo.org
[03:36:36] <paulproteus> And Naomi Ceder?
[03:36:52] <skay_> let me try! here's hoping I don't break stuff :)
[03:37:04] <paulproteus> Yay!
[03:38:02] <paulproteus> Is it possible to link to the slides in some reasonable way? https://speakerdeck.com
[03:38:16] <paulproteus> Aww, this is not the whole set.
[03:38:21] <paulproteus> So I guess we should fix that.
[03:38:47] <skay_> paulproteus: yes, go ahead and give me all the links you'd like in there
[03:38:54] <paultag> \o/
[03:38:55] <paulproteus> I think I want no new ones.
[03:39:17] <paulproteus> Read my lips. No new links.
[03:40:02] <skay_> reload, see if you like it
[03:40:18] <skay_> Isn't will awesome?
[03:41:13] <paulproteus> It is great!
[03:41:40] <paulproteus> Yes, willkg is awesome!
[03:42:15] <paulproteus> (oh, but please don't link the slides for now)
[03:42:39] <skay_> woa! did you know that pycon2013 had all the slides there?
[03:43:08] <skay_> ARG I ALREADY DID
[03:43:35] <paulproteus> (they're incomplete so I'd rather wait)
[03:44:09] <paulproteus> (sorry!)
[03:44:14] <skay_> let me get rid of that
[03:44:26] <paulproteus> I'll fix it on Wed
[03:44:31] <paulproteus> argv
[03:44:33] <skay_> kwarg!
[03:44:34] <paulproteus> (-:
[03:44:35] <skay_> no more slides
[03:44:40] <skay_> ok, next time you are ready, tell me or will probably and we can add hte link back in
[03:44:53] <skay_> I don't know who else has admin on pyvideo.org but I know we do
[03:45:42] <paulproteus> Cool.

[04:25:32] <skay> paulproteus: I read htmlpad. there is a typo "increasing focus one" you probably mean on not one
[04:27:55] <paulproteus> fixed
[04:28:20] <skay_> I wish you could embed pyvideo instead of youtube
[04:28:27] <skay_> pyvideo has nicer metadata
[04:28:45] <skay_> you could embed your embed in your embed!
[04:28:59] <skay_> an enigma wrapped in a mystery in a … I forget that quote.
[04:29:50] <skay_> I am going to wander off now. but I will check back again later to reread the blog post
